Scoot Credit Union Shootout to feature 8 games - The Edwardsville Intelligencer

EDWARDSVILLE – Following a one-year absence, the Scott Credit Union Shootout is returning to Edwardsville High School.

Eight games will be featured Saturday, including seven pitting schools from the Metro-East area against St. Louis. Both EHS teams will be in action.

“It’s been a long time and I wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to have this one,” director Rick Moss said. “For this year, we kept it local and didn’t try to get out-of-town teams because we weren’t sure what was going to happen.”

Tickets are $10 and good for all day.

Proceeds will be donated to Sager Strong, which raises money for research on blood cancers in memory of longtime NBA analyst Craig Sager who passed away in 2016 from leukemia.

The schedule is as follows:

Edwardsville girls vs. Civic Memorial girls, 11 a.m.

Belleville East vs. Westminster, 8 p.m.

The final seven games will be the Illinois-Missouri border war.

“This year’s schedule worked out really well,” Moss said. “After that first game, the rest are going to be border war games and we’re going to see how that works out.”

Moss said MICDS assistant athletic director Marshall Newman approached him two years ago about helping coordinate St. Louis teams for the Scott Credit Union Shootout.

“Marshall Newman helped me a great deal in getting this set up. We were happy to be able to do this,” Moss said.

This is the third year of the Scott Credit Union Shootout but first since 2019. The 2020 Shootout was canceled after the IHSA moved the basketball season from the winter to the spring due to the coronavirus.

The Scott Credit Union Shootout in 2019 drew a large crowd, especially for the Collinsville-Morgan Park game that featured All-State guards Ray’Sean Taylor for the Kahoks and Adam Miller for the Mustangs.

Taylor, now at SIUE, scored a team-high 24 points with 12 rebounds and five assists. He was 14 of 16 from the free-throw line in the 67-65 win in overtime.

Miller put on a show, scoring 32 points, including six 3-pointers and a one-handed jam. After one season at Illinois, he is now at LSU recovering from a torn ACL.

Also in 2019, the top two teams in Class 2A met with No. 1 Orr outlasting No. 2 Pinckneyville 71-67 in double overtime.

“If we get crowds like we did (in 2019), we are going to be really happy,” Moss said.

Moss is already looking ahead to next year, as well.

“Next year, hopefully things will start looking better … and we can bring some teams down from Chicago. There is also a team that wants to come from St. Joseph, Missouri,” Moss said. “We’ll see how it goes this year.”
